Preparing for An Emergency

There are some things you can do to help prepare for emergencies at home:

  • Create first aid kits for your home and cars. Each kit should include adhesive bandages, sterile gauze pads and tape, an elastic (ACE) bandage, a triangular bandage to fashion slings, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, scissors, antibiotic ointment, calamine and hydrocortisone lotions, syrup of Ipecac, cold packs and a first-aid manual. You can add other items -- such as bottled water or a thermometer -- to your kits. Be sure to check your kit regularly to replace expired or depleted supplies.
  • Organize medical information -- including major diseases or disorders, lists of medication names and dosages, blood type, and a summary of allergies -- for each member of your family.
  • Review safety procedures and eliminate hazards.
  • Take classes to learn first aid and CPR.
