Strangers at Your Door

Always ask strangers for identification before opening the door to them. If they claim to be from a utility or service, make sure they are wearing the proper uniform or have company identification. If you are uneasy, take the time to call the company and verify their identify and their purpose.

If a stranger asks to come inside and make a phone call, refuse. In an emergency situation, offer to call the local emergency service or police while they wait outside.

Don't give out any personal information to strangers. Don't participate in door-to-door surveys.

Do not let a stranger know you are alone in the house.

If a stranger refuses to leave, or persists in trying to convince you to open the door, quietly and firmly tell him you are calling the police - then do so.
