Kitchens require special attention to avoid falls and accidents. Some rearrangement may be required for safety. Move often-used items to lower shelves or into an accessible pantry. If you must climb for seldom-used items, use a sturdy stepladder with a handle or a “reacher,” a special device for reaching and grasping items.

Wipe up spills immediately and stay alert to cooking grease on the floor, as a result of frying foods. If you use rugs in the kitchen, make sure they are attached to the floor with double-sided tape. Don’t pick up more than you can carry comfortably. You may drop heavy pots and pans and cause a serious burn, fall or injury.
