Preventing Falls in the Living Room

Make sure there are no electrical cords, magazines, newspapers or pet toys in walkways. Remove throw rugs or tape them down with strong, double-sided tape. Low seats of chairs and sofas make getting up difficult. Add a sturdy cushion to increase it to a height that makes it easier for you to rise.

Have a cordless phone installed near your favorite chair, where you can answer it without getting up. Don't rush to answer a phone call -- your family members will allow it to ring or call you back if it is important. Caller ID is a nice feature that will let you return missed calls at your leisure or avoid unwanted calls.

Contrast becomes more important as we age. Having walls and carpet different colors helps us distinguish changes in levels. Any step-downs should be marked with paint or yellow tape along the edges.
