IF YOU MUST CALL 9-1-1

There are times when it is important to call for police assistance or to report an emergency situation. Calling 9-1-1 from any pay phone is free; it does not require depositing coins.

Follow these steps:

  • Stay calm
  • State the problem
  • If you can, give the complete address where crime/emergency is occurring or cross streets nearest the event.
  • Provide the name, address and phone number from which you are calling. (Most 9-1-1 calls are automatically traced, except for cell phone calls, but this information may prove helpful to emergency personnel.)
  • Let the 9-1-1 operator control the conversation. Answer all questions.
  • If you wish to remain anonymous, let the operator know your wish, but do not hang up.

Stay on the line until you are told to hang up or emergency personnel arrives.
