Tornadoes can occur anytime of the year, but the peak activity for tornados is between March and July. In Oklahoma, tornado season officially begins in March and reaches its height between March and May. In the northern states, tornado season usually peaks in the summer.
Each year an average of 1,200 tornados rip through the United States, leaving in their paths 70 Americans killed by tornadoes and 1,500 injured. Damage to homes, businesses, schools, and churches totals over $400 million annually.
